Program Overview

In less than 3 months, you can be prepared for a successful career as a medical administrative assistant! Eugene Vocational School’s curriculum is certified by the National Healthcareer Association and was developed by industry professionals with years of experience. The program is specifically designed to prepare you to pass the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam and get a job right after graduation.

The Eugene Vocational School’s Medical Administrative Assistant program is broken into 18 modules. You'll start each module by reviewing a specific learning objective and then move on to various reading assignments. These reading assignments have short quizzes, interactive games, videos, and images throughout to make it more interesting and help you quickly learn the material.

Program Orientation

In this module, the student will be introduced to the Medical Administrative Assistant training program. A learning objective for each of the modules in the program will be presented, along with information on navigating and using the features and functions of the online program.

Working as a Medical Administrative Assistant

This module provides an overview of skills and qualities essential for successful medical administrative assistants. It also introduces the medical office industry.

Computer Fundamentals

In this module, the student will become familiar with basic computer skills, including using hardware, software, and the Internet.

Keyboard Kinetics

This module will teach the student typing basics and help increase their efficiency on the computer keyboard.

Beginning Microsoft Word 2007

In this module, the student will learn how to use basic features of Microsoft Word 2007. Instruction will be provided on working with and editing text; formatting; and working with themes, styles, and tables.

Beginning Microsoft Excel 2007

This module will teach the student how to use basic features of Microsoft Excel 2007. It will provide instruction on editing and formatting worksheets, creating and working with charts, managing workbooks, working with page layout and printing, and using functions and formulas.

Healthcare Structure and Organization

In this module, the student will learn about the structure and organization of the healthcare system in the United States. The student will study healthcare consumers, healthcare providers, governing and regulatory agencies, third-party payers, healthcare vendors, and trade associations.

Medical Law and Ethics

This module gives an introduction to U.S. medical law, focusing especially on preventing and defending against medical malpractice claims. Ethics for medical administrative assistants are also addressed.

Healthcare Documentation

This module provides the student with an overview of healthcare documentation, including documentation types, report components, and formatting. The student will become familiar with healthcare documentation standards and HIPAA compliance regulations.

Exploring Healthcare Reimbursement

This module provides detailed information about the various types of payment systems used to reimburse inpatient and outpatient medical services. Additionally, the module introduces information about ICD-9 and procedural coding, billing, claims processing, auditing, and monitoring the coding process.

Medical Word Building

This module teaches medical word building, including root words, combining forms, prefixes, and suffixes.

Basic Anatomy

In this module, the student will learn basic anatomical structures grouped by body system. Illustrations and videos of the various structures and systems are included throughout to increase student understanding.

Mastering Medical Language

This module helps the student understand the specialized vocabulary used by healthcare providers and familiarizes the student with a variety of nuances specific to medical language. Specifically, this module will cover word differentiation, abbreviations, plurals, foreign terms, slang, and jargon in medical language.

Grammar and Punctuation

This module is a refresher of basic English grammar and punctuation rules. Upon completion, the student will be able to recognize and identify proper usage, language, and punctuation.

Medical Office Procedures

In this module, the student will learn protocol for the standard office procedures that medical administrative assistants are expected to perform. The module includes instruction on interpersonal and written communication, telephone procedures, front desk reception, and patient scheduling.

Medical Office Management

This module teaches the student important office management skills, including the management of staff and resources as well as how to handle medical office emergencies. In addition, it teaches medical records management for both paper and electronic records (EHR).

Practice Finances

Medical administrative assistants are often expected to take care of practice finances. This module prepares the student by training on billing, collections, credit, payroll, accounts payable, and banking procedures. It also provides an introduction to the use of medical office software.

Final Exam Preparation

Upon completion of the program, students will have the opportunity to assess their skills through a final exam. This module contains information about the structure of the exam, tips for passing it, and instructions for taking it.
